Live Sustainably

Can humanity be really a part of Mother Nature’s cyclicity ever? Or it will keep on waging a war against it and continue destroying the niche and completely break the sustainability of Mother Nature.

We are breaking cyclicity of the nature by trying to achieve linear growth with a false assumption that Mother Nature’s resources are never ending.

We are breaking the rule of give and take mechanism by selfishly and forcefully taking all good things from the nature. Whatever we give back is toxic, non-degradable, disastrous.

We are assuming that we are not dependent on anything in the nature hence caring about nothing.

Instead of having an eco-centric thought process and way of living, we have made it human-centric.

Instead of giving equal importance to every living and non-living thing, we have introduced human VIPism.

By disturbing and destroying the nature, we have already introduced a huge imbalance. We have destroyed the diversity.

We have introduced centralization of many things by overriding natural decentralization and have created many new problems than solving the ones in hand.

We have forgotten Mother Nature’s modesty, limits and are thinking of infinite growth which is actually leading to non-sustainable growth.

Here in India, our ancestors had very well understood the characteristics of nature, the association among living and non-living things, inter-dependency, diversity, limits and more importantly upcoming crisis due to possibility of humanity’s quest turning into a conquest.

They always guided people to live in association and in harmony with nature. For that they introduced nature as part of our lifestyle. Festivals came to existence not only to worship mighty nature and powers but also to indirectly protect the animals, plants, insects and many other things by associating them with one or the other festival. Gudhi Padwa-Kadunimb, Vat Paurnima- Banyan Tree, Narali Paurnima-Coconut, Ganesh Chaturthi-Durva, Vijayadashmi-Aapata, Nagpanchami-Nag (Cobra), Tulasi Vivah – Tulas, are some examples of wisdom out of many such. Not only this, our literature tells us that the sages also organized and encourage ‘Van Mahotsav’ (Mass Plantation) activities. Can you believe and imagine that in the era when there was plenty of jungles and less human population such activities could have even come into anyone’s mind? But our sages had the foresight, they knew what is coming and hence they tried their best to guide humanity.

Based on changing seasons they documented, year-round when to eat what, when to avoid what – all for our health

Today, we are behaving exactly opposite and carelessly. Just one example could suffice – On Vat Paurnima the branches of Banayan tree are cut from a tree, women purchase them on the roadside, bring them home and worship. Is this the wisdom that our ancestors tried to inculcate? The rate and the quantity at which the branches are cut do we believe that the Banyan trees will survive anywhere anymore?

Let’s change this careless attitude and let everyone start planting appropriate trees wherever there is an opportunity. Let us utilize the theme of our own festivals at least to plant associated trees and care for them till the time they become self-sufficient.

Above video gives just a glimpse of what we are talking about. Everyone can watch it, think and act!
