Health Of The Water
It was a lazy Sunday morning. After a hectic week, I had decided to reward myself with a few more hours of morning sleep. I got up when the sun rays falling on my eyes really pushed me to wake up. The first feeling I got was of an immense thirst. I rushed to the kitchen only to face the empty water purifier. Ahh, I forgot to turn it on at night. I couldn’t wait and decided to drink the tap water. Poured a glass full of tap water and sipped it down my throat. Heavenly feeling it was! Felt so content! A thought came to my mind, what if such divine water is not available to me anymore?
I was wondering if a city like the one I’m staying in can ever face water scarcity? Googled for some time and came to know that cricketer KL Rahul had to switch to a bucket bath instead of a shower due to serious water scarcity in the southern city of Chennai. (Bathing under shower is anyway wastage of water.) Oh ho! Surprising facts struck me as I googled more. Villages at 50-60 kilometers from my city face serious water shortage for most of the time of the year. If my city gets enough water then why can’t these folks get? I wondered.
The dam that we built on the river gives water to my city. Why can’t the same river give water to these folks, puzzled me. When I searched on the Internet I found some interesting blogs like Jeevit Nadi Blogs. Then I realized that the waste water originating from my city is put into the river without any filtering. Hence, we have converted the river to a drainage line. With little study I got to know that 70% of the river pollution originated from household waste water. Imagine, 70%. The detergents, phenyls we use to clean our floors, toilets and utensils contain harmful chemicals. Those chemicals pollute not just the river but our homes as well. It is just that we don’t see these pollutants in isolation in our home. They are visible in rivers when the entire city’s waste comes together.
Why do we use such harmful chemicals? How much time will it take to face the same fate of our neighbors that are just 50-60 km away from us? Are we ignorantly creating a recipe for our extinction? It took no time to realize that I’m a highly ignorant species, living in a denial mode.
I put on the stove to make tea and started searching for alternate detergents which might be easy on nature. I found a few like Turil. Surprisingly, these are available almost for the same price as those harmful ones. They are also widely available online, including on Amazon etc. I found many Do It Yourself options available as well, like Toxin Free Lifestyle. A question came to my mind, why don’t we use these alternatives which are much safer?
While sipping the tea, I ordered one and decided that I will use these myself first. If I find it useful then I will spread a word about it and will insist my dear ones to at least give it a try.
To make sure that I along with all others will keep getting tasteful drinkable water, this will be my first step towards a better future for the rivers. This initiative made my Sunday more promising.
