Recycling Is A Must But…

Yes, it is true that this photo is not picturesque, either not the reality presented by it!

Nowadays there is a lot of talk about things must be recycled. Do not use and throw but recycle. However, this way instead of solving a problem, we are simply shifting the problem. To recycle something new projects, new industries are founded. Later what happens is that the objective of controlling the generation of waste and recycling disappears. Only goal remains is to feed the recycling industries. More waste we generate more input we provide to such industry. Moreover if they cannot process the waste at the rate it is getting generated then such waste is dumped somewhere to pollute everything. Many a times it is the small countries which become the dump yards for big countries.

It is said that the amount of polythene waste that we have generated is so huge that if we create a single bag out of that waste then we can put whole earth inside it and easily tie a naught to that bag!

Hence, as the author of the book Ahead To Nature, Mr. Dilip Kulkarni perfectly said – The Quadruple should be

  1. Refuse
  2. Reduce
  3. Reuse/Repurpose
  4. Recycle

Refuse: First of all, let us refuse to use things that might pollute environment, that might lead to non-biodegradable waste and that might lead to generation of waste faster than the rate at which nature could dissolve it. Replace such things with their alternatives. For example, use clothe bag instead of polythene bag.

Reduce: After applying the first filter still if there is something which we cannot refuse to use then our approach should be ‘How can I reduce its usage?’, ‘How can I reduce the dependency on it?’

Reuse/Repurpose: Some time back a new era of ‘Use and Throw’ material began which initially seemed attractive – use and throw clothes, use and throw toys, use and throw devices however nobody knew or bothered what impact it would have on the environment. Hence the third important criteria should be how can I reuse the things that I have already used? Try to find out second, third, fourth and so on usages of things.

Recycle: If something really passes through the three funnels above and there is really no alternative then the time something finally becomes a waste then always prefer to send it to recycle.
