Maharashtra Day

Commemorating The Formation Of The State Of Maharashtra
01
May

Maharashtra Day

1st May, we celebrate as Maharashtra Day (महाराष्ट्र दिन). On this day, in 1960, the state of Maharashtra was formed from the division of originally known as Bombay State of the time of British rule.

Maharashtra state is decorated by the coastline (Konkan) stretching 720km, the Deccan plateau (दख्खनचे पठार) that is separated from the coastline by the huge mountain range called “Sahyadri” (सह्याद्रि).

Marathi is widely spoken language here and something written in Marathi can only probably give justice describing the state. Few stanzas below from the poem मंगल देशा! पवित्र देशा! by the renowned poet Govindagraj.

ध्येय जे तुझ्या अंतरी, निशाणावरी, नाचते करी;

While the Sahyadri range is the origin of many rivers like Godavari, Krishna, Bhima – The Lifelines, it is also called as the “Soul of the Freedom Fight”. It proudly carries over 350 forts which, in 17th century, along with great King Shivaji and his “Mavale” (मावळे) fought against many foreign invasions until their last breath and formed the ‘Swarajya’.

The importance of Sahyadri is very well described by Mr. S. A. Jogalekar in his poem popularly known as “सह्याद्री स्तोत्र”

Biodiversity

This Sahyadri range and the rest of Maharashtra is full of variety of flora and fauna. Sahyadri region also known as Western Ghat is one of the eco-sensitive zones in the world harboring huge variety of life forms. The people living in the region has protected the biodiversity with their traditions and beliefs like Devrai (Jungle of the deity).

Here in the above photo galley we introduce you to some of the specialties of Maharashtra.

Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj – no words can describe him. He is the “शिवसूर्य” of our country’s horizon. He will keep pouring light of hope for years.

Raigad (रायगड) fort is the King of all forts. It was the capital of Swarajya. When Shivaji Maharaj had visited the fort, he had admired it from the bottom of his heart. What he said at that time is documented in Sabhasad Bakhar.

तामण is our state flower, Mango (आंबा) is our state tree, Blue Mormon (राणी पाकोळी) is our state butterfly and the Giant Squirrel (शेकरू) is our state animal.
