Who Was Maruti Chitampalli?
36 years of forest department service. Explored the country during that time. Nearly 500,000 kilometers travel. Knowledge of 13 languages. Information gathered through communication with tribal and other communities. Hundreds of diaries where this information was recorded and preserved for 30 years. Based on those, publications like Pakshikosh (bird encyclopedia), Pranikosh (animal encyclopedia), and Matsyakosh (fish encyclopedia) were written. Twenty-five books on wildlife. All this achievement in a single lifetime belongs to Aranyarushi Maruti Chitampalli.
On Wednesday, June 18, at the age of 93, Chitampalli passed away in Solapur.
He was a wildlife researcher, a gifted writer, an internationally recognized ornithologist, and a lifelong student of forest science. Maruti Chitampalli had just been honored with the Padma Shri Award by the President. Though originally from Solapur, he spent his entire life in the forests of Vidarbha. Even in his final days, he did not want to leave the forest, but due to health issues, he had returned to his birthplace.
