What Exactly Does Rejuvenating 63 Ponds Mean?
In Gondia district, numerous ponds exist, but they lack vegetation and fish, rendering them lifeless. Consequently, the Dhivar community, which depends on these ponds, has begun to migrate.
Recognizing this alarming situation, Shalu Kolhe initiated a unique approach by treating the ponds as one would till agricultural land. Through her efforts, she rejuvenated 63 ponds across her village and surrounding areas. Her initiatives provided employment opportunities, enforced prohibition of alcohol in the village, curtailed domestic violence, empowered women, and compelled government authorities to take notice.
Despite having only completed education up to the 12th grade, Shalu Kolhe’s remarkable achievements have garnered attention and admiration. For a deeper insight into her inspiring journey, you can watch her interview conducted by Dr. Uday Nirgudkar.
